Retail media advertising

Every ad dollar, audited overnight.

Atom Ads reads every campaign, keyword and search term, finds the spend that isn't selling, negates it, moves bids toward what converts and holds each campaign to the ACOS you set. It even eases off ads on products that are about to run out.

What's inside

An ad agency's audit, running every night

Wasted-spend finder

Search terms and keywords that spend without converting, ranked by dollars lost, with one click to add them as negatives.

Bid optimizer

Raises bids where the return is strong, lowers them where it isn't, with the reason shown next to every change.

Goal autopilot

Give a campaign a target ACOS or ROAS. The autopilot proposes changes, shows a dry run, then applies them on schedule once you approve.

Stock-aware advertising

Linked to inventory, so spend slows on products close to a stockout instead of paying for clicks you can't fulfil.

Placements, pacing & dayparting

See where ads show and when they convert. Pace budgets across the month and shift spend to the hours that sell.

Search terms & n-grams

Find the words inside winning and losing searches, harvest new keywords, check coverage and watch share of voice against competitors.

How it works

Split, audit, merge

The same motion as the film: one stream of data splits across your ad platforms, each one gets audited, and the results come back as one number you can act on.

01

Connect

Authorize your ad accounts. Tokens are stored server-side, never in the browser.

02

Audit

Nightly reports score account health and list the fixes with their dollar impact.

03

Approve

Review suggestions or a dry run of the autopilot. Nothing changes without a rule you set.

04

Improve

Changes apply, results are tracked, and every edit sits in the change log to undo.

Account health

Know in one number whether your ads are healthy

The dashboard scores the whole account, counts critical issues and estimates what's recoverable this window. Below it: spend, sales, ACOS and orders, with the fixes ranked by impact.

  • Critical issues and recoverable dollars up front
  • Spend vs sales trend and anomaly watch
  • Ask the built-in assistant “why did ACOS jump?”

Search terms

Mine the searches that sell, cut the ones that don't

Every search term with spend, sales, clicks and ACOS, filterable by campaign and match type. N-gram analysis shows which words win across thousands of searches, so one negative can save dozens of wasted clicks.

The retail media audit: where ad money leaks

10 MIN READ·RETAIL MEDIA·UPDATED SEP 2026

Why retail media needs a standing audit

Retail media is the fastest-growing line on most brands' P&L, and the hardest to watch. Campaigns run around the clock, auctions change hourly, and a single broad keyword can match thousands of searches you never intended to pay for. Most accounts we look at have money leaking from the same four places.

Leak 1: search terms that spend and never sell

Broad and phrase match keywords reach searches that sound related but aren't buying your product. A brand selling milled flaxseed can pay for “flaxseed oil capsules” or “flax pills” all month. Pull the search term report for the last 30 to 60 days, sort by spend with zero orders, and add the clear misses as negative keywords.

The cheapest sale you'll ever make is the wasted click you stop buying.Audit principle

Optimus Nine ranks these terms by dollars lost and groups them into n-grams, the words that show up across many bad searches. Negating one word, such as “capsules”, can close dozens of leaks at once.

Leak 2: bids that ignore results

Bids set at launch rarely stay right. Keywords that convert at a strong return deserve more budget; keywords that barely break even deserve less. A good rule: compare each keyword's ACOS with your target, and move its bid a small step toward the target every few days rather than one big jump.

KeywordOld bidNew bidWhy
golden flaxseed$1.20$1.35Converts well under target
milled flax 2 lb$0.95$0.82ACOS above target
organic flaxseed$0.72$0.84Winning, under-served
Three platforms audited in parallel: wasted terms struck, bids adjusted, the result crunched into one number.

Leak 3: placements and time of day

The same keyword can convert well at the top of search results and poorly on product pages, or sell at lunchtime and waste money at 3 AM. Placement reports and hourly performance tell you where to lean in. Budget pacing then keeps a campaign from spending its month in the first ten days.

Leak 4: advertising products you can't ship

Paying for clicks on a product that's about to stock out is a double loss: the ad spend, and the ranking you lose when the listing goes empty. Because Optimus Nine's ads and inventory share one thread, spend on a product can slow automatically when its weeks of cover drop, and recover when stock arrives.

ACOS versus ROAS

ACOS (advertising cost of sale) is ad spend divided by ad sales. ROAS (return on ad spend) is the inverse: ad sales divided by spend. An ACOS of 25% is a ROAS of 4×. Set the target from your margin: if a product earns 40% before advertising, an ACOS above 40% loses money on every ad sale, unless you're deliberately buying ranking or new customers.

ACOS = Ad spend ÷ Ad sales  ·  ROAS = 1 ÷ ACOSBreak-even ACOS = your margin before advertising.

Automate safely

Automation earns trust in steps. Start with suggestions you approve by hand. Move to a dry run, where the autopilot shows exactly what it would change. Only then let it apply changes on schedule, within limits you set, with every edit written to a change log you can reverse.

Coming next: Google Ads and Microsoft AdvertisingAmazon Ads is live today. Audits for Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising are in beta, using the same split-audit-merge approach, so all three platforms roll up into one savings number.

Audit checklist

  • Search terms with spend and zero orders negated
  • Recurring bad words added as phrase negatives
  • Bids stepped toward target ACOS
  • Placements and hours reviewed, pacing on
  • Low-stock products throttled automatically
  • Autopilot in dry run before it goes live
